In short, of course this is Alpha behavior. Most professional athletes are somewhere in the Alpha hierarchy, and we often see Alpha bravado manifest in the heat of competition. It seems like a really stupid thing to do in this case, but the penalty also seemed ridiculous.
Ultimately, polite and “proper” modern society will always fail to constrain or control natural Alpha instincts!
